I Can't Keep My Fox Terrier You have a Wire or Smooth Fox Terrier and are having problems with the dog in your home. What to do? First, don't wait until the problem escalates and it's a serious problem. If you have purchased a puppy from a reputable breeder, then that is the first phone call that you make. Tell them what is going on and ask for suggestions and help. If you choose a good breeder, they will be able to explain what is happening and ways to work with your dog to clear up the problem. A good breeder will have gone over all the aspects of owning a Fox Terrier with you first and been sure that you understood what type of dog you were buying. If you did not get your Fox Terrier from a responsible breeder then you have a bigger problem. Commercial and "backyard" breeders are in this, only to make money and sell puppies. There is little knowledge of the breed or of its needs. They often sell puppies to people that should never have a Fox Terrier. Education is the key to everything. Knowing what the Fox Terrier temperament is like and what the dogs need are, can make a big difference. There is a lot information on this site that should help you. Please take the time to read it. If there is a Fox Terrier Rescue group anywhere near you, call them. They may be able to help you. Often just knowing why a dog does something, can make a difference. Most problems can be worked out if you catch it quickly and treat it accordingly. And if you want to. Like raising a child, having a Fox Terrier in your life, takes time and patience and commitment. If you don't have these to give to this dog, then it probably will be better off in another home. Fox Terrier Rescue is primarily to take Fox Terriers from animal shelters. Depending on how busy they are, they can take dogs from individual homes. Talk to the nearest FT rescue group and see what their situation is. If both of you agree that the best solution is for Fox Terrier Rescue to take your dog, then you will need to get the dog to them. Rescue nevers "buys" a dog. You must be willing to sign over ownership to the Rescue group. Then they will take on the responsibility of taking care of the dog and seeing that it gets into a good home. It is appropriate for an owner giving up a dog to make a donation to the Rescue group. They are going to have to put money into the dog for care and housing. As all rescue dogs are always altered before placement, that cost can also be added on. It is helpful and appreciated if the owner has that done first or is willing to donate the cost. Fox Terrier Rescue groups will keep any Fox Terrier that they take into rescue for as long as it takes to find that "right" home for it. Just food and everyday care can add up. But the dog will be safe and will find a good home. If you are having problems with your Fox Terrier, call right away and see if a Fox Terrier Rescue person can help you. That way your dog can stay with you. If that isn't the best choice then realize that the rescue may not have room right at that time, so let them know as far ahead of time as possible that you need to place your dog. It is better for an experienced rescue person to place the dog than for the individual to do it. Our people are trained in how to find the best possible home for the do, how to screen prospective adopters and what questions to ask. Your dog deserves that. You can find a list of Fox Terrier Rescue groups at the Fox Terrier Rescue website. If there isn't anyone near you , contact us directly at: info@foxterrier.com Hopefully we can help both you and your Fox Terrier. | |||
