2007 What We Do Best Judge What we do best - Judge: Melinda Butler  How fun to be asked to judge two of my favorite subjects...fox terriers and photography! I was born in 1950 and lived my first five years in a huge foreboding old house on a main street in "smallish town" Illinois with no playmates nearby. When no one was looking, I befriended Alfie, the Dalmation next door who hated children! I spent hours and hours with Alfie.. hopefully he wasn't too bored..and thus began my love for dogs. We moved when I was 6 to a neighborhood filled with playmates, but I missed Alfie and pestered constantly for a dog. Finally when I was 12, we got a wire puppy from friends in southern Illinois. Her name was Tammy and she was my constant companion. She was almost all black and cost a whole $35!! She is the reason fox terriers will always be my breed.Following college in Wisconsin I worked in Chicago in the brokerage business until 1979 when I came out to Arizona along with Tammy, who was by then in her golden years, for a brief stay with my parents who had retired in Mesa. However, I met my husband Jeff here so the visit was not so brief. We have been married for 26 years and have one daughter Emma who is a senior in college. I have been into Photography since childhood and have spent hours and hours taking pictures and playing around in darkrooms. In fact, my trusty old 35mm finally wore out, so I guess I will need to get with the times and go digital! Our fox terriers, Frieda and Tucker, are gone now. Tucker was only 8 when he suddenly got cancer and left us only days following the surgery to save his life. We still cry. Frieda lived to the age of 17 1/2 and is buried next to her pal in our yard. It will be one year now that we have been dogless. I do collect "wire" antiques so you would never know we are dogless upon entering our home. Maybe when our hearts mend, another fox terrier will come along. I look forward to lots of great pics so keep your camera handy..you never know when a fox terrier is going to do something they do best! See All Photo Entries    | |||
