2009 Wire Photo Contest Judge ![]() Mary Ann Roma My husband George & I had our start in WFT's about 25 years ago when he brought home a pet wft that one of his clients had given to him. We fell in love with Trina instantly, and soon she worked her way into our hearts and quickly established herself as head of the household. Our vet at the time told us that Trina had the best tempermant that he had ever seen in a wft, and suggested we should think about breeding her. Never having bred a wire, let alone any dog, we were a little unsure of what we were about to do. Little did we know what was to come!!
Also, at this time, I was active in breeding and showing exotic birds. I was a co-founder of the South Jersey Bird Club which is still active today after some 30 years. And yes, still have a macaw, a moluccan cockatoo, a lesser sulphur crested cockatoo, a cockatiel, and a Bourkes parakeet.
After breeding Trina, who had 10 puppies, someone suggested we go to a dog show to see what quality wft's looked like. Though we loved Trina, she was, after all, not show quality, even though we thought she was the prettiest little girl we ever saw. When we attended our first dog show, and saw the wires in the ring, we were hooked. Goodbye to the birds, and in came the wires.................
I started showing actively as an owner handler about 1988. About a year later, we started building our home in Bucks County, Penn. Since we built the home ourselves, we had to ease up on the dogs and concentrate on putting a roof over their heads. It's an ongoing project.........!!
We have bred a few champions, but numbers were never my goal. After attending Montgomery County Kennel Club and the Central States show, I knew I wanted to breed a wire that was good enough to place at these shows. One of the girls I bred, in 1996 was BOS at MCKC, Ch IronHills Irresistible Choice, 'Candy'. Then, in 2000, Candy's daughter, IronHills Jitterbug, Emma, out of Ch Blackdale Ringmaster, handled by myself, under Judge Tommy Yates, won the bred by class, WB, and then BOS to her sire, Ringmaster. It was a day I will never forget........!! We also had a beautiful airedale from the 'Serendipity' Kennel......Serendipity's Guardian, and Andrew finished easily, so now have a champion airedale. As long as I am able, I think I will always have an airedale...........not to breed, but just for their very funny ways.......our new one is Brenna....................and is actually an Andrew half sister. Just coincidental..............Soon after that, Torie Steele of Steele Kennels came into my life............she took charge of Emma, and the rest is just fun history!!!!
We are members of the Garden State All Terrier Club, the American Fox Terrier Club, for whom I do the trophies.......the WFTCCS, of which I am puppy referral, something that I love doing, the Hatboro Dog Club, of which I was on the board for a number of years, the Fox Terrier Club of New England, the Wire Fox Terrier Association, and The Fox Terrier Club.
We have 2 boys, George Jr 45, who has one daughter and resides in Orlando Florida, and Mark, who has 4 daughters.
These dogs have brought so much joy and entertainment to our lives, I don't know how our life could have been spent better. They have also given me some of the best friends of my life. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's pictures!!!
