Punish Yourself (not the dog)

Do have a rolled up newspaper or magazine handy for potty training. If the puppy makes a mistake, take the rolled up paper and hit yourself in the head over and over while repeating, “I Will Watch Puppy Closer Next Time and Take Him Out Sooner.”

That’s the key folks! Puppy Training has everything to do with being:
  • observant
  • pro-active
  • and practicing a good Behavior Management Program
Continue this while you wait for the puppy to be physically mature enough to recognize the sensation early enough to get to the proper location to eliminate.

Remember being a little kid out playing and "forgetting." Give the pup a break.

For older dogs the protocol and management is exactly the same, because Potty Training was “skipped over” or absolutely trashed when the dog was puppy. The plus with the older dog is you have mature bladder and bowel control, so you aren’t playing the “waiting” game. You may be dealing with a past history of missed associations – so be diligent and consistent.

You Will Succeed!
