Observe

Observe pro-elimination behaviour outside - The Protocol - so you can recognize it later when you see it inside.

"Interrupt" the behaviour soon enough to get puppy outside to eliminate. Hopefully.

Do not say “potty-time-potty-time” while the dog is jumping on you, leaping at leaves or staring at the clouds. Remember that dogs learn associatively. This means they will associate the word “potty” with every activity you use it in!

When your dog begins to sniff, circle and squat - then say your potty word. Soon you will have potty on command. Yes! You have about one second to reinforce after the behaviour has occurred.
  • Mark the behaviour with a Reward Mark - Good or Yes Reinforcement

  • Have the food handy in your pocket so the Primary Reinforcer can be delivered in a timely manner. Do not have the food hanging in the dog's face the whole time or he will be distracted by the treat from the business at hand.

  • You may choose to walk the dog after pottying, thereby providing a Real Life Reward for a job well done.

  • Play any games after pottying.
Again, teach the dog to potty immediately - then the fun begins.
