Obedience

Obedience can be just learning the basic manners of living with others or it can be the formal work of the Obedience Trial.

Most Fox Terriers will say "you gotta be kidding?!" when you start on obedience work. They are very smart, but see little reason to do something just because you said so. They can learn anything, it just has to be something they want to do.

Starting into formal obedience work can be daunting with a Fox Terrier. They think much like a three year old child. Life is fun and why should I be doing this boring stuff? So your training must follow this mindset. Generally all positive reinforcement techniques will work with Fox Terriers. They get bored very easy so you don't want to work your dog on the same thing over and over as you would with most breeds.

If you are planning to take your Fox Terrier to an obedience class be sure to talk to the instructor first. Ask if they have ever worked with a Fox Terrier. If they like the terrier temperament and ask what kinds of dogs they like working with. If they tell you that they think terriers are dumb or they don't have any experience with them, then don't go to that class. If they are willing to work with you and your Fox Terrier, and like the "free spirit" of the Fox Terrier, then give it a try.

One method of training that often works well with Fox Terriers is called "clicker training". Check out this website: www.dontshootthedog.com for more information on clicker training.

If you wish to show your dog in obedience trials be sure you understand how they work. Go to a trainer that shows in obedience trials and know the rules and regulations. There are three levels of obedience titles. The C.D. (companion dog), C.D.X. (companion dog excellent), U.D. (utility dog) . Only a handful of Smooths and a few more Wires, have ever attained a U.D. Most Fox Terriers get very bored before they get that far. We are very pleased whenever we hear of a Fox Terrier and handler that stayed with it long enough to get a U.D. The C.D. is fairly easy if you work at it. It shows that your dog is able to learn the basic's of heeling, coming when called, sits and downs, on and off lead. The C.D.X. is all off lead and involves the above plus jumps and retrieving. This is harder, but attainable for you and your dog if you work at it and make it fun for him.

Always remember that the Fox Terrier must be having a good time to work well in any event. He has to like doing the work. Click here to see past FTN Newsletter articles on obedience.
