Puppy Management
Top of the list is Management! These are Babies! Do you give a four-year-old child the keys to the new Buick? Not Even. So why is that four, five or six month old puppy running the house unattended. Naughty Naughty Owner!
Puppy Management means you have the following options:
Puppies are:
- In their Crate.
- In a safe fenced yard or on a trolley with owners at home.
- In your direct view.
- Tied to your waist so you can keep an eye on them.
You must be the Good Guy! The clients I have want to be the Good Guy and hate being cast in the role of bad guy. So do not put yourself in that position!
- Be on hand to provide pup with praise and cookies for correct elimination in the correct location.
- Prevent mistakes indoors with Management
- In addition, Make Frequent Trips Out.
By the time pups are 8-12 weeks old, depending on the individual somewhat, and large vs. small breed, my rule is:
- If in crate pups can go 2-3 hours, usually 4 hours overnight
- If up and playing, pup must go out every 10-20 minutes
This time frame increases individually as the pup grows older. He has to determine physiological control of his bladder though; you cannot do it for him. This decision is out of your hands! Just like children, who mature at different rates physically, so it is for your puppy. To solve this puzzle, the puppy has a lot of things to learn.
The puppy must recognize the sensation for what it is soon enough to:
- Tell you about it.
- Get to the proper location.
Much of this puzzle has to do with physical maturity. I see my young puppies getting the concept long before they have the physical control to carry it out successfully. This is evidenced by the fact that when I miss intention behavior, they are piddling near the back door.
