Intention Behavior

You must catch the dog at the beginning - when you see Intention Behavior indicating that the dog has to potty.
If the dog pees on the carpet and is now feeling much better and has taken one or two steps after his favorite toy and is starting to move toward you, his mommy, with a joyful smile on his face - and you step in with fire and brimstone what have you just punished? Correct - looking relieved, looking at toys, or worse yet bounding toward you joyfully. What a great way to ruin future recalls.

Dogs don't know there is a big economical and emotional issue over the Oriental that Grandma gave you. Don't Lose It! (It being your temper.)

Use cool, rational thought and affection for your dog. Watch, get your licks in at the appropriate times, and be effective at modifying behavior. That's where it's at!

Once you have given effective and proper feedback over two to three "possible errors" in a row, you are going to be seeing light at the end of the Potty Training Tunnel. Remain watchful. By six to twelve months things will be looking pretty good. And Congratulations - You have just passed Potty Training! What a bright Human you are!
