How Much Exercise And What Kind?

by Pam Bishop
If you ask the average Fox Terrier, he will say, I wanna play all the time! But most of us can’t spend that much time with them. So how much exercise do they really need? And what’s the best kind? A bored Fox Terrier is going to get in trouble. These are not docile, quiet dogs, they are active, working terriers. They need active excerise every day. If you live in an apartment or condo and don’t have a fenced yard of your own, the Smooth or Wire may not be good breeds for you. The older dogs do slow down a bit and if you are willing to spend time walking them a lot, they can live in this type of situation. But the young Fox Terrier is most likely going to be literally climbing the walls without a fenced yard to run and play in.

To me there is nothing sadder than a Fox Terrier that has been kept in a kennel run or crate most of it’s life. These dogs need to be able to run. However, they will keep running and not come back if you don’t have them on a leash or in a fenced area. As most of us can’t begin to keep up with a running Fox Terrier, you need that fenced area. Fox Terriers love to play games. They love balls, big soccer balls and little tennis balls. They love squeaky toys and garden hoses and water! You can think up all kinds of games to play with them to keep them exercised.

You will also need to exercise their minds. These are very intelligent dogs. They are not much interested in formal obedience, but can learn anything if you take the time to work with them and make it fun for them. It must be fun for the Fox Terrier, or you’ll have an unhappy pet.

So when you are thinking of exercise for your Fox Terrier, be sure to pick things to do that will be interesting and fun.
