How To Train Your Dog To Come To You Your fox terrier runs out into the yard…something has his attention. A squirrel? The neighbor's cat? It doesn't matter, you want him back in the house right now. So you call "here Spot! Spot Come!"……nothing….is he deaf? Could he not hear you? Nope, he's just a normal fox terrier. Fox terriers, both Wires and Smooths, are free spirits and they have not been bred to respond to an owners "command". It's not in their nature. If their nose, eyes or ears tell them there is something interesting to be checked out, then that's the priority in their mind. They are much like a small child in this way, it's all about them. You will be there when they get back and they don't understand the dangers of the world. Like that small child, you must protect them from getting into things that would hurt them. The fox terrier is not going to come to you just because you call them. They may come right away, thinking that they are going to get something that they want. But they can never, ever be depended upon to come when called. Even more so if you yell at them, and they think that they are in trouble. Then they will never come to you. It's most important that you keep your fox terrier on a leash or in a securely fenced yard at all times. Be very careful if you take them with you in the car. They will bolt as you are trying to get them out of the vehicle. Keep the leash on the dog while he is in the car. Understand that this is just the way a terrier thinks. He is not trying to be "bad" and you will not train him out of this behavior. It's who he is. So the next time that you call to your fox terrier "Here Spot" and he actually comes to you, praise him and let him know that you are very happy. But don't expect him to do it every time you call. | |||
