The Last Hunt

She stepped quietly out the door and slowly trotted across the lawn to where the pipe ended in the flowerbed. She stopped and checked to see if anyone new had been around. Nothing. Crossing the gravel drive she stopped mid-way to sniff the air and then continued on to the other end of the pipe. There had been some activity - maybe a ground squirrel or (if she was lucky) a rabbit. At any rate she would have to start digging to try and make whatever was in there come out. She seemed to not have much energy these days. It had been hot so she would just take her time and rest more often.

Not having much luck she thought maybe she would try over by the pile of iron pipes. Again, no new scents. Might as well check out the long woodpile. Now this is more like it! Lots of good smells here! There could even be a few cats - definitely some mice and squirrels. wish there weren't so many tree branches hanging down. It makes it so much harder to get to the game.

She sniffed halfway down the long pile and finally found a spot that seemed interesting. She began to dig. Wood fell to the ground and left a good size hole into which she could squeeze. Something was in the way and out she came with a long stick in her mouth. She dropped it then went back in the hole. It was quiet now but she could sense something was there so on she went. She was almost to it but the space was getting tighter and the wood wouldn't budge. There it goes! She tried hard to get to it but the squirrel bolted out the other side. You could tell she had had enough for now. Maybe this afternoon she would try again.

For now she would go to the cool house for water and a long nap. She took a long cool drink of water and walked slowly to her bed stopping only to say "hello" and get her ears scratched. Only then did she lay down and dream her final dream. It was a good hunt.

On July 19, 1996, American & Mexican Champion Wendywyre's Leading Lady died quietly in her sleep. We loved her. She is missed.
